A client working in the healthcare industry is looking for a solution for a class 3B laser area.
Communication with the client reveals that the laser is used for research and does not involve live patient exposure.  In this situation, ANSI Z136.3-2005 section 4.1.1 requires all control measures to be established as set forth in ANSI Z136.1-2007.

The client operates the laser as a "Supervised Laser Operation" referenced by Z136.1 section 4.1.1.2.  In this situation, access control systems are not necessary for a class 3B laser area.  The operator maintains a visual surveillance of the laser area and can terminate laser emission when a malfunction or unsafe condition occurs.

Laser Safety Systems recommends the following solution:  All modules are wall surface mounted using single-gang outlet boxes designed for this purpose.  Surface mounted track conduit runs between all modules.

Our standard LSS-2380 warning module with visual and audible warning abilities mounts cleanly on the surface of the wall beside the entry door.  The posted warning sign references this module to warn of the present laser state.
The warning meets the requirements of ANSI Z136.1-2007, sections 4.3.9.4, 4.3.9.4.1, and 4.3.9.4.2

LSS-2381 Interlock control module to arm and disarm the laser interlock system.  It is mounted on the wall surface at a convenient location in the laser area.  The yellow illuminated arming button reminds workers in the area when the system is armed.

LSS-2384 Laser/Shutter Interface Module attaches to the laser power supply interlock connector. It is mounted on the wall near the laser power supply.  The interlock system 24VDC power is brought in at this location from a wall-wart power supply at the same time the relay contacts for the laser are brought out.

Since the laser cannot run unless the interlock is set, the system acts as an engineered safety method to ensure the illumination of the outer door warning whenever the laser is in operation.
