Part # LSS2380  Laser Warning Module

The Laser Warning Module provides both audible and visual indication of the present interlock state.  It is microprocessor controlled to enhance the ability to communicate information to laser workers.

The module can clearly indicate three different interlock states:
  1. Normal safe state (ready to arm) - high intensity green LED's lit solid
  2. Crashed safe state - high intensity green LED's flashing
  3. Laser ON - high Power Luxeon LED strobes behind the international laser warning symbol

The audible warning enunciates during a change of state:  A rising frequency tone indicates the state is changing to a level of higher safety concern.  A dropping frequency tone indicates the state is changing to safer state.

Part # LSS-2381  Interlock Control Module

The Interlock Control Module is the primary means of arming and disarming the laser interlock.  One or more interlock control modules can be placed anywhere within a single laser area to control the state of the interlock.

The "DISARM" button will always take precedence over a request to arm the system. (All crash switches also override ability to arm the system.)

LED's on the front label clearly convey armed, disarmed, and crashed status of the interlock system

The "DISARM" button is the preferred method of securing the system for normal shutdowns.  Following best practice, the activation of emergency stop switches should be reserved for emergency situations and periodic system testing only.

Part # LSS-2383  Emergency Crash Module

The EMERGENCY CRASH MODULE is a safety device specified in ANSI Z136.1-2007 section 4.3.10.2.1.  The module can be placed in a location quickly accessible to the laser workers where it is intended to be used for emergency deactivation of the laser or laser shutter to reduce the output levels at or below the applicable MPE.

The module has priority over all interlock controls.  Multiple modules may exist on the system

The switch is a maintained mushroom push-lock, turn-reset type Emergency Stop switch with LED backlit illumination. The LED illuminates red when the room interlock is in the "set" condition and is highly visible over a wide area.

Part # LSS-2385-A  Access Control Module

Laser Safety Systems LLC has taken the monitoring and control functions that have historically been contained in a large central control panel and consolidated them into a microprocessor controlled module that serves both keypad access control and door safety logic functions.  This module is included with the LSS-2385 defeatable access control kit.

The Access Control Module and the three accompanying modules; 2385B, 2385C, and 2385D are designed to meet the requirements of ANSI Z136.1-2007 section 4.3.10.2

As is the case with all other modules, the Access Control Module was custom designed from the ground up by Laser Safety Systems.  We began with the fundamental assumption that standard "burglar alarm" keypads are not adequately designed for use in safety systems. Our module uses a Shrack SR2M Safety relay for positive control of the interlock state while the microprocessor controls the door switch monitoring, timing, and keypad decoding functions.  The microprocessor to safety relay interface utilizes an AC charge-pump safety circuit.  In the unlikely event of a microprocessor failure, the charge-pump safety circuit would not receive a refresh signal and would drop the entire room interlock to a safe state.

The module permits authorized laser worker entry into a laser area by controlling the magnetic lock.  There are multiple combination sets permitted.  This allows temporary codes to be given to qualified students or temporary workers.  The code can be changed after the granted access period or if a laser system layout change is made that requires worker retraining. The control keypad provides tactile and audible feedback of numeric entry.

Part # LSS-2385-B Magnetic Lock Interface Module

The Magnetic Lock Interface Module is a companion module to the Access Control Module.  It serves as the primary input/output wiring location for access point controls. This module also provides an audible enunciation of door activity within the laser area.  A laser operator can differentiate between user entry and exit by the tones produced.  Upon hearing an entry tone, the laser operator can stop and verify the worker has donned proper laser protective eyewear. This module is included with the LSS-2385 defeatable access control kit.

The module provides connection terminals for:
  • Door limit switches.
  • Building fire alarm and/or laser smoke detector contacts.
  • Push-To-Exit switch (LSS-2385-D)
  • Door "crash bar" (REX) switches, floor pressure activated exit pad, or motion detector.
  • Magnetic lock
  • Outer door Emergency Crash Module (LSS-2385-C)

All crash functions and fire alarm interface inputs break magnetic lock power and take the interlock to a "crashed" safe mode.  Request to exit functions utilize failsafe magnetic lock release monitoring circuitry.

Part # LSS-2385-C  Outer Door Crash Module

The Outer Door Crash Module is similar in appearance to the LSS-2383 Crash module, but is designed specifically as a companion module for the 2885 access controls.  This module is included with the LSS-2385 defeatable access control kit.

One set of the trip contacts will break power to the Magnetic lock, while the second set of contacts crashes the interlock.

The Outer Door Crash is required to permit rapid access to the laser area by fire or rescue personnel during emergency conditions.

Some users choose to place a protective "lift to access" cover over this switch to prevent tampering.

The switch is a maintained mushroom push-lock, turn-reset type Emergency Stop switch with LED backlit illumination. The LED illuminates red when the room interlock is in the "set" condition and is highly visible over a wide area.

Part # LSS-2385-D Exit Request Module

The Exit Request Module is included with the LSS-2385 and LSS-2386B Access Control kits.

The button is pressed to initiate an interlock bypass for exiting the laser area.  The large green pushbutton is illuminated from the rear with a high brightness LED for high visibility in a dimly lit environment.

When used with the LSS-2385 kit, the rear illumination is present only when the magnetic lock is energized. This gives the operator a visual indication of the exit command and magnetic lock status.  All of our access control kits provide an audible indication of egress as well.

Part # LSS-2387 Door / Curtain Closure Monitor

This monitor module provides a Non-Defeatable Area or Entryway Safety Control in accordance with ANSI Z136.1-2007 Section 4.3.10.2.2

The module is placed beside a door and wired to a door position sensor.  The room interlock will crash when the sensor indicates an open condition.  A Dual sensor is provided for redundancy.

Although the LSS-2380 series interlock system can accommodate multiple doors with full access controls, a significant savings can be realized by designating a single door for defeatable access and all other doors as emergency ingress / egress with the LSS-2387 Non-defeatable Monitor.

An armored dual magnetic switch is included with the purchase of the LSS-2387 Non-defeatable interlock kit.

Part # LSS-2387B Door / Curtain Closure Monitor

The 2387B is an upgrade that contains a separate relay that is activated during laser operations.  This relay has two form C contacts available.  Some clients use this relay to disable an electric strike during laser operation.  Others use it to drive an external Bi-Lume sign.  Of course with two form C contacts, it can do both at once.

Accessory Part # LSS-2305 400# Magnetic Door Lock and mounting hardware
The LSS-2305 Magnetic Door Lock is the ideal choice for use with our system because it is specifically designed to run with low current draw on the  24 volt wiring.
This makes it an ideal lock when multiple doors defeatable doors are used on the interlock system.

This device is included with the purchase of the LSS-2385 Access Control Kit.  As specified above, the LSS-2385 can also be purchased as a "mod" kit without the magnetic lock.
(Includes L&Z bracket mounting hardware for open-inward or open-outward door configurations)

Accessory Part # LSS-2306 Magnetic Switches
With Stainless Steel armored cable, the LSS-2306 Dual Magnetic Switch is ideal for door position sensing or monitoring the integrity of a class 1 laser enclosure.

The switch is included with the LSS-2385 Access Control Kit with 60 inches of armored cable as part number LSS2306-60.
It is also included with the LSS-2387 kit and the LSS-2386B kit with a 12 inch length armored cable as part number LSS2306-12.

Part # LSS-2386B Defeatable Access Monitor Kit with card reader interface

The LSS-2386B provides another method for implementing defeatable access control in accordance with ANSI-Z136.1-2007 section 4.3.10.2.

The system is designed to initiate an interlock override when it receives a voltage pulse from a card reader system.  This system is used when card reader access control systems already exist at a facility and the facility is willing to program the card reader to restrict access to laser trained individuals.  The interface between the card reader system and the laser interlock system are galvanically isolated by an opto-isolator.

Part # LSS-2384  Laser / Shutter Interface Module

Recently updated in August 2011, the LSS2384 Laser / Shutter Interface now provides local control for arming and disarming the final laser interlock relay.  The advantage of this local control is most evident when multiple relay modules are placed on a single interlock system.  The room interlock can be armed, yet each individual station can arm and disarm independently whenever the main interlock is set. An example of this would be an arrangement where the LSS2384's are controlling several independent shutters on one or more laser tables.  Each shutter can be opened individually, yet all will close simultaneously if the main room interlock trips.

The user can connect to two sets of Form C dry contacts (common, normally-open, and normally-closed) and control a load up to 6 amps on each set.

The LED's on the front label clearly show the operational conditions.

A jumper is provided on the rear of this module that can be configured for automatic arming and disarming of this module simultaneously with the main interlock

Our LSS-2385 module utilizes our exclusive and proprietary "Intelligent Access Timing" as is described below:

  • Pre-Access timing:  If an override is initiated but the door is not opened within 5 seconds (factory default), the override condition is canceled.  A short cancellation tone is produced to convey the condition to the user.  This "pre-access" timer can be adjusted via the programming keypad to any value between 5 and 15 seconds.  The automatic cancellation avoids the wait that would otherwise occur in a non-intelligent access timer.
  • Access timing:  If an override is initiated and the door is subsequently opened, the unit senses the opening and immediately transitions from pre-access mode to access mode where the access time programmed in the keypad is counted.  During the countdown period, pressing any keypad button or pressing the push-to-exit button will restart the access timer.  This is convenient at times when the door must be held open to bring in a large piece of equipment.   The access timer can be adjusted via keypad to any value between 5 and 99 seconds.
  • Access warning time:  If an access is started and the door is held open beyond the programmed access time, a screaming tone is produced to warn the user of an impending system trip to safe mode.  If the door is closed during this warning tone period, the interlock will not trip. This warning tone factory default time is 5 seconds, but can be adjusted via keypad to any value between 5 and 15 seconds.
  • Post-Access automatic cancellation:  When the door is closed after an access, the controller senses the closure and cancels the override condition within 2 seconds of closure.  This allows the system to be ready for another entry or exit request without waiting for the normal timer to expire.  As an example, a user of a non-intelligent entry system, as those carried by other manufacturers, may have his access timer set to 40 seconds.  The user might pass through the door in 5 seconds, but the timer will continue to run for an additional 35 seconds.  Another person approaching the door would typically need to wait for the timer to expire before entering his access code because the time remaining is an unknown.  Even worse, a non-qualified person could approach this door and make entry during this "wait" period because they see that the controller is in an unlocked state.

Another major difference that distinguishes Laser Safety Systems access controller from those of other manufacturers is the fact that our controller is dedicated to a single door.  One door, one controller.  Two doors, two controllers.  Why is this important?  If a room is configured for two or more defeatable access doors, our system will independently grant access for each door.  The systems sold by other manufacturers will unlock ALL doors that are configured for defeatable access for the timer period even though the access may have only been requested at a single location.  This has serious potential safety implications.

All four modules of the 2385 series plus the magnetic lock, door sensor and maglock mounting hardware are included in the LSS-2385 Access control kit.  The kit can also be purchased as a LSS-2385 Mod kit that eliminates the magnetic lock and outer door crash module.  Non-defeatable interlocks are easily accomplished using module LSS2387 below.
